Two Chinese nationals, both trained scientists, have been arrested and charged in a chilling biosecurity case involving the illegal smuggling of Trichoderma fungus cultures into the United States. The men were caught at Los Angeles International Airport in possession of concealed biological material harvested from agricultural research labs in China — a breach of international biosafety and trade laws.

While Trichoderma is commonly used in agriculture as a soil-enhancing microbe, certain aggressive strains have been linked to plant diseases, crop failures, and invasive contamination. Investigators warn that improperly handled or genetically modified strains could threaten local ecosystems, food systems, and seed integrity.
