Gardens are living systems that evolve through observation, patience, and adaptation. The Living Nursery at Oasis Farms began as a small container nursery while plans for planting trees in the landscape were developing.
Today the nursery includes dozens of young Moringa trees grown in containers and small garden spaces. These trees provide a valuable opportunity to observe how different Moringa species respond to real conditions such as temperature changes, container growth, and transplanting.
These observations form the foundation of the Oasis Farms Living Nursery, where lessons from the garden are shared with others interested in growing resilient plants.
The Oasis Farms nursery began with approximately 75 young Moringa trees growing together in a small number of large containers.
This approach allowed many seedlings to grow in a limited space while planting plans were being finalized.
Growing multiple seedlings in shared containers produced a common nursery effect:
• trees grew tall and slender as they competed for light
• stems remained flexible and thin
• root systems developed while space was limited
This temporary arrangement allowed the trees to establish themselves before being separated and transplanted.
The nursery also includes several Moringa stenopetala trees.
This species differs from oleifera in several ways:
• thicker, more woody stems
• slower overall growth
• larger leaf structures
Although the trees grow more slowly, they often develop a more tree-like structure over time.
Observing both species in the same environment provides valuable insight into how each adapts to local conditions.
This is the most widely cultivated species of Moringa.
Characteristics include:
• fast growth
• soft, flexible stems
• frequent leaf production
Oleifera trees are commonly grown for their leaves, which are used fresh, dried, or powdered.
The stenopetala trees growing at Oasis Farms have a unique origin.
The seeds were obtained from a grower in Hawaii who had acquired them from a collector connected to African seed sources. These seeds were among the final seeds available from that line after the original collector passed away.
Growing these trees helps preserve a living seed lineage that connects multiple growers across different regions.
When the trees mature and produce seeds, some will be shared with other growers to help continue that lineage.
During a winter cold event, temperatures at Oasis Farms dropped to approximately 28°F.
Many of the young container-grown trees lost their leaves and appeared to be dead. Within weeks, however, new growth began to emerge from stems and nodes.
This recovery pattern demonstrated an important lesson about Moringa:

Gardeners often discover that Moringa trees are more resilient than they initially appear.
The next stage of the Living Nursery is the planting of the first in-ground grove.
Three Moringa oleifera trees will be planted in a triangular pattern in the West yard. Each tree will be surrounded by a system of companion plants arranged in supporting rings.
This planting method creates a small ecosystem around each tree and allows herbs, pollinator plants, and soil-supporting plants to grow alongside the Moringa.
Over time, the grove will provide additional observations about how container-grown trees adapt once transplanted into the ground.
The Living Nursery reflects an important idea: gardens are ongoing learning environments.
Each season brings new lessons about:
• plant growth
• soil health
• weather patterns
• species behavior
By documenting these observations, Oasis Farms hopes to share practical knowledge with gardeners, homesteaders, and anyone interested in growing resilient plants.
